DIGITAL ARTEFACT PITCH

The media niche I’ve chosen to explore for my BCM241 Digital Artefact is poetry and poetic writing. My selected topic is an incredibly huge scope of work and therefore I’ve elected to focus on verses that discuss ideas of healing and personal growth. More specifically, writing that emphasises the development of the mind and heart to better oneself and overcome difficult experiences and circumstances. I wish to particularly investigate, the effectiveness of poetry to both evoke and convey emotion from the perspective of both the reader and writer.

Autoethnography is a research method drawing on personal experience to interpret something. Therefore, my autoethnographic approach is capitalising on my extensive love for reading poetry to answer my research question on the effectiveness of how emotion can be evoked through powerful text. In addition to this, my second approach is to write my own poetry to further explore how simple it is being the creator to discuss vulnerability and convey personal emotions. The applied combination of both of these approaches allows me to not only investigate my personal experiences as an audience member in my niche but also to expand my expertise and understanding of the field through the creation of personal writing. Further to this, in undertaking my study I will also employ the use of approaching, conceptualising and contextualising as ethnographic skills. I have used these skills already in my planning to determine the methodology of my project. This being the creation of interesting, tangible, and understandable poetry writing written by myself, whilst also furthering my work by reading and familiarising myself with the key figures and personas within my chosen field of inquiry.

In order to achieve this task, I will need to uphold an online persona to be consistent throughout my focus and study of this topic. This not only ensures my work is consistent but also allows me to connect with my audience. To do this I will take on two personas, these being, public and collective. The public persona results from presenting my vulnerable side to a published audience, a side that is mostly unknown to others. Finally, the collective persona comes from the collective sharing of the emotions presented in my writing between myself and my audience.

The shape of my digital artefact is not overwhelmingly large and will consist of me publishing 2-3 new verses of work each week on my Instagram page. This will also include additional creations written by my close friends about their own personal journey of growth, which will act as features within my social media page to break up the flow of creativity and reengage the audience.

I have also included the map of my field site I created and the mood board inspiration for my project.
