RAPID PROTOTYPING

MIDJOURNEY + BEAM STUDIO + LASER CUTTING

BCM112 – ASSESSMENT ONE

For assessment one we were asked to experiment with emergent media forms to familiarise ourselves with the technology and explore its possibilities. Previous to this assignment, I was completely unaccustomed to these media systems and decided this would be a good time to further develop my learning. As a result, I settled upon utilising the laser cutter and beam studio to create a wooden bookmark. I chose this project for its social utility as an avid reader who is consistently at a loss for bookmarks; resulting in constantly having to fold the edges of the page to keep track of my progress, damaging my books. To create this project, I used AI image generation technology to get the flow of my ideas started and then remediated a collection of images to design my bookmark and create a tangible prototype. As my final design is aquatic themed, I sourced a lot of inspiration from Etsy to scheme my design ideas, examples include, an octopus bookmark, and a jellyfish bookmark; as well as, art page ‘Deviant Art’ to consolidate and refine my creative thoughts.  Within the design process I was forced to iterate my prototype several times, as I had to alter the dimensions of my prototype to ensure that it worked for the selected materials. Further to this, I significantly practised iteration when using MidJourney AI image creation, in order to create the perfect image that aesthetically complimented my piece of work; this saw several varying designs being included in my process towards creating a favourable prototype. In addition, contextual materials I used to develop my project included, a link from site Ponoko regarding different project ideas, sourcing out information on laser cutting in general as an effective media form, and lastly, reading about our infatuation with the sea to create a desired product.
