MAPPING THE FIELD SITE OF MY STUDY

00:00 / 01:00

As I begin the initial creation stages of my Digital Artefact, I must first map the field site of poetry as my niche in order to gain a thorough understanding of its function and purpose as I am about to enter into my research. Poetry as a whole is a massive niche and therefore has many components and factors that alter and impact its creation. Below I have mapped out the most common themes of poetry, the basic aspects of poetry, motivations for writing poetry and key poetic figures that are relevant to my study.

Specifically for my research, I have chosen to explore the effectiveness of poetry as a creative outlet, to outwardly express emotions and personal experiences in a way that allows you to take control of swirling thoughts and messy emotions inside your mind. To do this the ethnographic skills I will develop and need to employ are approaching, conceptualising, and contextualising. I have used approaching to help aid in selecting the best research method for my topic, which I’ve concluded is immersing myself in my niche through personal content writing. Similarly, through conceptualising I will craft my research in an interesting, tangible, and understandable way through the means of poetry writing, to remain engaged with my audience. Lastly, I am contextualising through frame research by having a competent knowledge of poetry and poetic materials, whilst also familiarising myself with the key figures within my selected theme of writing. To further this, my perspective towards my research study is appreciative as I have always been an avid reader and recently in my teenage years have moved towards modern poetry for the uniqueness of its style. Therefore, I believe that this approach will allow me to openly analyse my niche through a positive framework and strengthen my capacity to generate new knowledge.

To problematise my niche I may consider the effects of poetry and the influences behind wanting to write in this style. Due to the obvious nature of this format of writing being extremely emotive, it leads us to ponder both the positive and negative impacts of this on the reader. However, there is an evident lack of scholarly responses in regard to this niche as it is not a traditional research topic and therefore will heavily rely on personal experiences of myself and others and the feedback of readers to help generate a response to my ethnographic study.

Mapping the field site of my study has been extremely beneficial in beginning to understand the function of my niche and its key components. This newfound knowledge and perspective will aid my undertaking of this ethnographic study of poetry and will hopefully be useful in engaging with my audience.
